The studio · Southsea
Independent recording and rehearsal space on Albert Road, Southsea. Making noise since 2016.
The centrepiece
The CADAC J Series gives the control room a genuine analogue heart, surrounded by the preamps, compression, microphones and conversion needed for a modern session.
Full equipment list
Console, conversion, microphones, outboard, monitoring, drums, amps, instruments and rehearsal PA.
112A Albert Road
Southsea Sound is an independent studio in the heart of the city’s music quarter.
It’s a working space rather than a showroom: somewhere bands can rehearse, make records, pull songs apart, put them back together and spend a day getting something right.
The studio combines an analogue recording workflow with modern digital production, without making the equipment the point of the exercise.
Recognised for what we do
Experienced production from first idea to final mix.
Live music, workshops and community projects.
Feel welcome. Feel comfortable. Make something great.
Meet the team
Southsea Sound is a small independent studio. These are the people you’ll actually be working with.
Our head engineer has been playing, touring and producing for over 20 years. He is hugely inspired by, and a strong advocate for, the Steve Albini school of recording — valuing authenticity over all.
Self-taught in the UK DIY punk underground and specialising in heavier guitar-based artists, Tim is happiest working with a diverse range of clients. His eclectic client list has included fast technical punk, hardcore, power pop, soulful singer-songwriters, metalcore, jangly indie, doom, thrash, crust and plenty more.
He has also collaborated with major film production companies, theatre companies and the likes of BT. Audio engineering, video production, mixing and mastering, ADR, voiceover and session guitar are all available at Southsea Sound.
He’s also exceptionally patient and professional, so whatever your skill level, he’ll make you feel welcome, relaxed and prepared to give your best performance.
Studio owner, manager and in-house vocal specialist El has been a singer and performer for over 20 years, previously touring across the UK and EU.
When not running the studio, she runs vocal noise workshops under the name Grrls to the Front. She can also be hired for lessons, pre-recording vocal warmups, harmony writing and backing vocals.
El also works in events as a coordinator, partnering with local promoters founding The Portsmouth Promoters Collective. She’ll also hire you a backline or quote to design your event artwork if you ask nicely.
Engineer, skilled composer and professional session musician. Andy did his apprenticeship with us and is now taking on clients.
Whether producing beats or melting your face with his riffs for hire, you’re guaranteed excellent service from Andy.
Inside
Control room, recording space, vocal booth, bar and courtyard garden — the working spaces that make up Southsea Sound.
The main listening and mixing room, built around the CADAC J Series console and our analogue and digital recording setup.
Live room — a place to track drums, record loud guitars, choirs or anything else.
A separate recording booth for vocals, voiceover and anything that benefits from a little isolation.
Coffee, tea, beer, ale and soft drinks — plus sticks, strings and other last-minute studio essentials.
Step outside, get some air and reset between takes in our little courtyard garden.
Southsea, Portsmouth
The studio is on Albert Road — surrounded by independent venues, shops, bars and places to eat.
That matters more than it sounds when you’re spending a full day recording. You can get food, disappear for coffee, walk to the seafront or just get out of the control room for ten minutes.
Southsea SoundSince 2016
Records, rehearsals, events, workshops, bands starting, bands ending and a lot of cups of tea in between.
