What is Grrls to the Front?

Grrls to the Front is a monthly gathering where we explore our voices, build confidence, and connect through zero pressure larking about. It’s not about singing perfectly – it’s about making noise together in a safe and supportive space.

Expect a mix of singing games, harmony workshops, playful exercises, and communal noise-making. There’s no performance pressure, no need to read music, and absolutely no judgment. We’re not geared towards eventually playing live, this is a chance to sing in a group. That’s it.

Whether you’ve sung in choirs for years or have never dared to open your mouth in front of others – you’re welcome here.

Who is it for?

Grrls to the Front is a trans inclusive group for women and gender non-conforming people aged 18 and over. You don’t need to be a “singer.” You just need to be up for trying something new in a warm, inclusive environment. You’ll never be made to sing alone, if you don’t want to do something, you don’t have to and there’s free tea, coffee, biscuits and a licensed bar. That bit isn’t free though. Steady on.

Who’s Behind It?

Grrls to the Front is run by El Morgan  (she/her), a musician and vocal practitioner who’s toured all over the UK and Europe. She now runs Southsea Sound, a much loved and highly respected recording studio, bar venue and rehearsal space in Southsea.

With years of experience on both sides of the mic, El creates a space that feels playful, empowering, and a little anarchic – where everyone is free to make sound in their own way.

What People Say

“I put myself somewhat out of my comfort zone by coming which turned out to be a great thing! El’s created such a great space in these workshops. A very very cool concept.”

“We must all find pockets of joy in our lives no matter what we are going through and this is certainly my pocket of joy.”

“It is everything I had hoped for and more. El has made the group safe, welcoming and FUN.”

“ Great to go to a music learning event that doesn’t rely on music theory or reading music. This added to the overall feeling of inclusivity and openness: definitely no snobbery involved”

We’ve Been Nominated!

🏆 Grrls to the Front has also been nominated for a Portsmouth Music Award in the category of Best Live Event or Initiative. We’re chuffed to be recognised for building something joyful and inclusive right here in our city.
